Objectives: Although it is reported that the number of suicide in Korea has notably increased in recent years, there has been few studies that attempt to analyzethe role of demographic and/or socioeconomic characteristics of the diseased on their suicide. This study aims to investigate unequaldistribution of suicide among Koreans by their socio-demographic characteristics.
Methods: Employing the 2000 Census and the 2000 Death Certificate data, we calculate the age-, sex-, education-, occupation- and marital status-specific suicide mortality rate. Further, for the education-, occupation- and marital status-specific relative risks are also computed based on the Poisson regression model.
Results: The suicide rate in 2000 is 17.6 per 100,000 people. Suicide is more prevalent among males, less educated, and older Koreans, compared to their females, more educated, and younger counterparts, Ofinterest is the highest risk of suicide for agricultural and fishery workers amongst the various occupational groups. Being divorced also shows higher relative risk of suicide than the married Koreans.
Conclusion: Demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of individuals play important roles in creating unequal distribution of suicide in South Korea.
